STAVANGER, Norway - The U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team opened the 2006 Nordic Cup with a convincing 3-0 win vs. Denmark as India Trotter, Danesha Adams and Katie Griffin tallied for the United States. All three are playing in their first Nordic Cup tournament.

The young Americans will face Iceland next on July 18 in their second match of Group B at the world's premier competition for U-21 women. The USA is going for its unprecedented eighth straight title at the 16th Annual Nordic Cup, which takes place every summer in northern Europe. Iceland upset host Norway, 3-2, in the other Group B match, setting up a huge contest on Tuesday that could decide the group title and a berth in the championship game. The winners of the two groups advance to the title game on July 22.

'It was a good start, not just the from standpoint of the result, but we were also able to get a lot of players their first Nordic Cup game under their belts,' said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. 'We have a lot of players that are fairly inexperienced at the international level, so to get a win like this in our first game is great. You always have to win the first game of the Nordic Cup to stay in the picture for the championship game, so I was very pleased with their performance today.'

The USA dominated the match, firing 19 shots while allowing Denmark just two, neither on goal, but didn't break the game open until a two-goals-in-two-minutes burst with 14 minutes left in the first half.

The USA's first goal came off a corner kick from the right side in the 31st minute as Tiffany Weimer launched the ball into the middle to Trotter, who powered her header into the net from six yards out. It was Trotter's first international goal in her first U-21 match. Trotter and Angie Woznuk, who started the match in the midfield, have both been training with the full Women's National Team in Residency Training Camp this summer.

The USA scored one minute later through Adams as Brittany Taylor sent the speedy forward behind the defense with a perfect through ball down the left side. Adams ran onto the ball and slotted her chance inside the near post from 12 yards out. It was Adams' second international goal at the U-21 level, but she has three at the U-20 level.

The USA added an insurance goal just two minutes from the end as midfielder Bristyn Davis beat a defender in the left side of the penalty box before cutting a pass across the 18-yard line for Griffin, who lifted her first-time finish into the right corner. It was also Griffin's first international goal. She had entered the match just seven minutes before scoring.

'We were able to connect out of the back and were able to link well with the midfield, which gave us some good rhythm and helped created a ton of chances,' said veteran Sarah Huffman, who played the entire match at outside back after playing attacking midfield her entire college and youth national team career. 'It was a really good start.'

Goalkeeper Val Henderson, a member of U.S. team headed to the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Championship in Russia later this fall, earned the shutout, but with a solid U.S. defense marshaled by Kendall Fletcher and Rachel Buehler, she did not have to make a save. Adams, who like Henderson is on loan from the U-20s, will also play for the USA in Russia.

The win vs. Denmark was a big one, not only because the U.S. has a young team and it was the first match, but also because the Danes are the only team to beat the USA in the Nordic Cup since the 1998 championship game, when the USA lost to Norway. The 1-0 loss to Denmark came at the 2002 Nordic Cup during group play, but the USA got some help from host Finland, which defeated Denmark, allowing the USA to advance to that year's title game on goal difference.

In the Group A matches, Germany defeated Sweden, 2-0, and England defeated Finland, 3-1.
