Stanford Affiliates Janet Evans Invitational Recap

Los Angeles, Calif. - A total of 13 current and former Stanford swimmers competed in the long-course meters 2006 Janet Evans Invitational at the University of Southern California from July 13-16. Former Stanford swimmer Tara Kirk (2000-04) continued her post-collegiate success in the pool by capturing the gold medal in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.67) and a silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.65).
Another former Stanford swimmer Kristen Caverly (2001-05) placed among the top three with a bronze medal performance in the 200 backstroke by checking in with a time of 2:16.72. Caverly also swam in the 400 IM and placed fourth in 4:54.15.
Junior Brooke Bishop also had a strong showing with a fourth-place finish in both the 50 freestyle (26.37) and 100 backstroke (1:03.79). Bishop also swam the 100 freestyle, placing 11th overall while swimming in the A consolation final (57.31) and was 22nd in the prelims of the 200 freestyle (2:06.25) but did not compete in the final.
Sophomore Andrea Axtell swam three events in the competition with her highest showing in the 200 backstroke as she placed ninth overall by winning the A consolation final (2:18.64). In the 100 backstroke Axtell also swam in the A consolation final and placed 12th overall in 1:05.87. In the 200 free preliminaries, Axtell was 51st (2:08.28).
Senior Lauren Costella's highest finish was her seventh-place showing in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 17.06.33. Costella swam in the championship final in the 800 freestyle, placing eighth with a time of 8:52.77. In the 400 IM, Costella placed 29th with a time of 5:04.77.
Incoming freshman Whitney Spence swam in two A consolation finals in the 200 and 400 freestyle, where she placed 13th (2:04.91) and 16th (4:29.96), respectively. Spence also swam in the 800 freestyle and 50 freestyle, finishing 41st (9:16.86) and 44th (27.94).
Sophomore Laura Wadden also reached a pair of A consolation finals in both the 200 backstroke (13th, 2:21.98) and in 100 backstroke (15th, 1:06.34). Wadden added a 19th-place showing in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:19.20.
Senior Morgan Hentzen was the final Stanford affiliate to make an consolation final with a 12th-place overall finish in the 800 freestyle (8:56.93).
Senior Desiree Stahley had her highest finish in the 200 IM, swimming in the B consolation final and placing 19th (2:23.51) overall. Stahley's second swim in a B consolation final came in the 400 freestyle, where she placed 20th (4:23.56). Stahley's other swims included the 800 freestyle (25th, 9:07.55), 200 freestyle (39th, 2:07.29) and 50 freestyle (57th, 28.17).
Sophomore Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy swam in three B consolation finals with her highest finish in the 100 backstroke (21st, 1:06.93). McCarthy's other swims included the 50 freestyle and the 200 backstroke in which she placed 24th in both with times of 27.43 and 2:26.79, respectively.
Others that participated in the preliminaries were junior Elizabeth Durot (800 freestyle, 27th, 9:07.85 200 freestyle, 48th, 2:08.28 50 freestyle, 64th, 28.33), and sophomores Alexa Merz (50 freestyle, 26th, 27.47) and Fiona Gispen (50 freestyle, 69th, 28.40).
