July 24, 2006

BERKELEY - Three members of the 2006 Cal crew claimed the gold medal as members of the Canadian eight at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium Sunday.

Rising junior Jan Tize, who hails from Vancouver, B.C., rowed bow for the Canadians, with senior Daniel Casaca of Toronto in the sixth seat and junior Max Wyatt, who own U.S. and Canadian dual citizenship, in the seventh seat.

Canada opened more than a second lead after 500 meters and maintained an advantage throughout the 2000-meter race. The German squad, which trailed by two seconds at the halfway point, made a push at the end, but Canada crossed the line in 5:30.72 to the Germans' 5:31.78.

In the pairs, junior Marko Marjanovic of Serbia teamed with countryman Jovan Popovic in the pairs competition, but results were not immediately posted on the World Rowing website.
