O'Neill, Smith Lead U.S. to Gold at U-23 Worlds

BERKELEY - Led by head coach Dave O'Neill and rising senior Megan Smith, the U.S. women's eight rowed to a gold medal at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium Sunday.

O'Neill, who recently guided the Bears to their second straight NCAA championship, served as head coach of the American squad at the regatta. Smith, from Templeton, Calif., rowed in the No. 3 seat.

In the race, the U.S. led from the start and finished in 6:06.68, more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Belarus, which crossed the line in 6:08.98.
