Trojans Win World Rowing Under 23 Championships Medals
July 24, 2006
USC incoming freshman Gabriela Varekova won her third World Championships title, this time in the Under 23 category, and sophomore Magda Madziewicz helped Poland's four to a bronze medal at the 2006 World Rowing under 23 Championships, held July 20 to 23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
Varekova led the Czech double, which took the early lead over the field and never looked back, dominating the race. At the finish line, Gabriela's double took gold, Germany won silver and the Netherlands took bronze.
While Varekova's double was definitely the favorite coming into the event, Madziewicz's Polish four was a decided underdog. After a slow start, they came up with a great push from behind to take the bronze medal, missing silver by 0.2 seconds.
Junior Ligita Kaviere, a 2006 All-American first teamer, took fifth place in the petite final for Latvia. It was her first performance in a very deep field of single scullers.
