Bruin Soccer Players Contribute To Milk Cup Opening Victory
July 31, 2006
UCLA soccer players Tony Beltran, Chance Myers and Sal Zizzo contributed to the U.S. Under-20 National Team's 3-0 victory over Wales in the opening match of the 2006 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Beltran and Zizzo started for the U.S., and Myers came in off the bench for Beltran as a defender in the 84th minute. Zizzo played 66 minutes at the forward position.
The U.S. tallied all three goals in the first half, with Jonathan Villanueva and Dax McCarty scoring in the fifth and 35th minutes, respectively. In between those goals, a 30-yard strike by Beltran was ruled an own goal after deflecting off a Wales defender.
The U.S., the defending Milk Cup champions as an Under-18 squad, sits atop the six-team Elite Group after earning three points from the first match and is in a prime position to advance to the championship match. The U.S. will next face Denmark on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Denmark tied Turkey, 1-1, in its opening match today, while Paraguay upended the hosts Northern Ireland, 3-1. A victory on Wednesday would ensure the U.S. a spot in the final on Friday, Aug. 6.
