Nine Bears to Compete at Summer National Championships

IRVINE, Calif. - This week, America's elite swimmers will compete for spots on five international teams at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, and nine former and current California women's swimmers will be among the participants. The meet, which starts today and runs through Saturday Aug. 5 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, Calif., will feature nearly 20 Olympic gold medalists, including former Cal star Natalie Coughlin.

The Golden Bear contingent also includes junior Leann Toomey, junior Emily Silver, recent grad Helen Silver, sophomore Jessica Hardy, senior Annie Babicz, senior Erin Reilly, junior Rachel Ridgeway and senior Lauren Andrews.

The swimmers will compete for a spot on a national team which will travel to one of the five following events: the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships (Aug. 17-21, Victoria, British Columbia), the 2007 FINA World Championships (March 25-April 1, Melbourne, Australia), the 2007 World University Games (Aug. 8-13, Bangkok, Thailand) and the 2007 Pan American Games (July 14-21, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Cal's nine swimmers are entered in the following events:

Lauren Andrews: 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke

Annie Babicz: 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke

Natalie Coughlin: 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle 100 freestyle.

Jessica Hardy: 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, 100 freestyle

Erin Reilly: 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle

Rachel Ridgeway: 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 butterfly

Emily Silver: 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle

Helen Silver: 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke

Leann Toomey: 100 butterfly
