Aug. 3, 2006

Senior Amanda Blong led the Bruin divers at the 2006 U.S. Diving Championships in Indianapolis, IN, finishing 10th on one-meter for the Bruins' highest finish of the meet so far.

Blong qualified 12th (213.40) to the semifinal round on 1M and improved on her prelim score to finish 10th overall with a total of 228.05 points.

'This is Amanda's best finish at a Senior National Meet,' said Dive Coach Tom Stebbins. 'I think she is on her way back from a tough (injury filled) winter and look forward to seeing her and Sara (Clark) compete Saturday.'

On platform, sophomore Tess Schofield finished 15th overall (215.80) after finishing the prelim round in the 17th spot (210.40). She was strong and competed well but missed her fourth dive, causing her to miss the finals by 15 points.

'I am very proud of Tess and what she has done this year,' added Stebbins. 'I don't think her results are in line with her level of work. I am really looking forward to having her return to work in the fall.'

Sophomore Marisa Samaniego was 17th on one-meter (191.10). She started strong and competed well but had a miss in the 4th round that kept her from qualifying for the semifinal. On three-meter, Samaniego placed 24th overall (204.81) and did not advance to the semifinal round.

'Misa had a great year,' said Stebbins. 'What is now part of her diving is the foundation we will build on for the coming years. I am really looking forward to seeing her continue to compete as a Bruin and am extremely optimistic in her ability to join the elite within our sport.'

Sara Clark and Blong will compete in the 3M Synchro competition on Saturday.
