Zach Catanese Named To Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Arizona State University senior safety Zach Catanese has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive back. Catanese is one of 33 student-athletes on the list, and one of only five from the Pacific-10 Conference.

Catanese (Redding, Calif.) had an outstanding first season in Tempe in 2005 , totaling 107 tackles, second highest on the team. He is the leading returning tackler in the Pac-10 Conference in 2006. The transfer from Shasta College also had two sacks and an interception last season while earning All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors.

The Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation=B9s best college defensive back, is one of college football=B9s most sought after and prestigious awards= .

It is named after history=B9s greatest all-around athlete, a man who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on offense, but also was an awesome defensive back. Recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame simply as 'The Legend', Thorpe also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists the first Monday in November and then to three finalists the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, telecast from Disney World on December 7. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on February 7.
