USA U20 Team Earn 97-57 Win over Puerto Rico

MEXICO CITY, Mexico - The United States' Under-20 Women's National team began the FIBA Americas U20 Championship Tuesday with a 97-57 victory over Puerto Rico in Mexico City, Mexico.
The University of Wisconsin's Jolene Anderson nailed a trio of three-pointers and finished with 12 points, while Oklahoma's Courtney Paris chipped in 11 as the United States built a 52-37 first-half lead over Puerto Rico. The USA continued dominating in the second half, outscoring the islanders 45-30, for the eventual 97-57 rout, as Paris finished the game as the USA's leading scorer with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and Anderson added 16 in all.
Hampton did not see action in today's game due to a minor knee injury sustained during practice in Mexico. Her availability for the remainder of the tournament is doubtful.
With the withdrawal of Costa Rica and Jamaica, the 2006 FIBA Americas U20 Championship for Women is being disputed in a round-robin format with the top three teams, based on records, qualifying for the 2007 FIBA U21 Women's World Championship, which will be played July 27-Aug. 5 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The 2006 FIBA Americas U20 Championship for Women features competition between six teams - Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the USA - Aug. 8-12 in Mexico City, Mexico.
On Wednesday, Aug. 9, the action features the USA versus Canada at 2 p.m., Bahamas faces Brazil at 4 p.m. and Puerto Rico meets Mexico at 6 p.m. Thursday begins with Canada and Bahamas clashing at 2 p.m., followed by Brazil versus Puerto Rico at 4 p.m., and the USA against Mexico at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 features the USA against Bahamas at 2 p.m., Puerto Rico against Canada at 4 p.m. and Mexico versus Brazil at 6 p.m. Aug. 12, the final day of the tournament, pits the Bahamas against Puerto Rico at 2 p.m., the USA against Brazil at 4 p.m. and Canada faces Mexico at 6 p.m.
