Joh and Michaels Advance at U.S. Women's Amateur
Aug. 9, 2006
Sophomxore Tiffany Joh and incoming freshman Sydnee Michaels each advanced to the second round of match play at the 106th U.S. Women's Amateur at the Witch Hollow Course at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.
Joh, the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks champion, had no trouble defeating Alice Kim of Los Angeles 4 and 3. In an 11-hole stretch, she played two-under par golf while Kim buckled under the pressure of a major championship. On the day, with the usual match play concessions Joh was two-under par through 15 holes.
Michaels pulled off an unlikely upset if age and experience count for anything. The soon-to-be UCLA freshman ousted departing USC senior Irene Cho 3 and 2 in one of the first matches of the day. Cho never led in the match while Michaels played even par through 16 holes. Cho made three bogeys on the day, and lost every one of those holes.
Jun lost 1-up to Jennifer Osborn of Huntington Beach in a match where the UCLA senior seemed unable to buy a break. Jun cut Osborn's lead to one at the 14th with a par, but both players halved the remaining holes, including dueling birdies at the 15th.
Park, the winner of this event in 2004, lost 1-up to Lauren Espinosa of Hickory Creek, TX, on the final hole by making a bogey.
On Thursday, Michaels meets Alison Walshe of Wesford, Mass. at 8 a.m. and Joh meets Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, IA at 9:20 a.m.
