Aug. 9, 2006

NORTH PLAINS, ORE. -- Former Washington All-American Paige Mackenzie won medalist honors at the U.S. Women's Amateur, Tuesday, and followed that up by defeating her first round opponent in match play, Wednesday, at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

By claiming medalist honors, Mackenzie became the second Husky in as many years to earn the distinction as last year former UW NCAA champion James Lepp was the medalist in the U.S. Men's Amateur. Mackenzie shot three-under par including a two-under 69 in the first round and one-under 70 in the second (69-70-139). She edged 2006 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion Tiffany Joh and 2005 U.S. Girls Champion In Kyung Kim by two strokes.

In today's opening round of match play, Mackenzie - the top-qualifier - defeated Leah Wigger of Louisville, Ky., three-up with two holes remaining. Mackenzie advances to play Jennie Lee in the round of 32, Thursday, at 8 a.m.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship continues through Sunday.
