Cal Enters Second Week With High Expectations

Aug. 13, 2006

BERKELEY - Entering week two of training camp, the California Golden Bears slapped on the pads for a two-hour plus practice on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Bears continue to prepare for their opener at Tennessee on Sept. 2.

'We have started really focusing on the reps of the guys who are going to be in the mix for playing time,' head coach Jeff Tedford said. 'We give certain percentages to guys, but we won't change much else up; it's still too early.'

Offensively during the later portion of the practice, Nate Longshore hooked up with Cameron Toler for a 25-yard reception and Steve Levy threw a bomb to Drew Glover for a 35-yard reception. Marshawn Lynch broke through the defense to collect several impressive runs of 15-plus yards.

As has been the pattern following each practice, Tedford fielded questions from the media in attendance and the most commonly asked questions related to the quarterbacks and the spread offense; he continued to express confidence in his signal-callers.

'The quarterbacks are looking fine, they're doing a good job; they've learned it [the spread offense]; I think they're really paying attention to detail,' said Tedford. 'I think they're going to be just fine.'

Cal returns to the field for their second of five two-a-day practices on Monday. The team will hold its first intrasquad scrimmage of the year on Thursday. The scrimmage will be closed to the public.

'Getting us [the coaches] off the field and letting them play by themselves [will be the biggest difference in the scrimmage],' Tedford said. 'We haven't gone live, we hold people up, but we'll be able to see tackling ability and the ability to break tackles; we will actually play real football.'

The season-opening game at Tennessee will be televised live by ESPN beginning at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific). The home opener for the Bears is Sept. 9 against Minnesota at 4 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-800-GO-BEARS.
