Fall Camp Update #6

Aug. 14, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford Football continued 2006 training camp on Sunday with a return to a single practice format at the Elliott Football Practice fields. The Cardinal closed out the day with another spirited 15-play scrimmage.

'I was pleased with our intensity today,' said head coach Walt Harris. 'It was nice to see the offense bounce back after yesterday's sub-par performance.'

Anthony Kimble led off the scrimmage with a six-yard run off-tackle. On second down, Ray Jones took a handoff up the middle, made a nice move to the outside and gained 12 yards. On the next play, Toby Gerhart gained five tough yards for the offense. On Gerhart's run, nose tackle Ekom Udofia broke through the line and was in great position to pin the freshman back behind the line of scrimmage. Instead, Gerhart was able to shake through it and pick up a positive gain.

On second-and-five, Trent Edwards hit Mike Miller over the middle for a 13-yard gain and a first down. Edward's play action fake froze the defense long enough to allow Miller to slip through the middle.

'The run game is the foundation of our an offense,' commented Edwards. 'It has the ability to set up the play-action and the down-field passing game.'

The Cardinal defense answered on first and second down as Trevor Hooper and Michael Okwo held the offense to short gains. On third down, Edwards dumped off to Gerhart and the powerful running back bowled his way for an eight-yard gain and a first down. Two plays later the freshman running back scored on a one-yard run off tackle.

The drive by the first team offense covered 60 yards in nine plays.

'I am real excited about the dynamics of our run game,' commented Edwards. The power running ability of Nick Frank, Emeka Nnoli and Toby Gerhart will allow us to add an extra element to our offense.'

The Cardinal return to a two-a-day format on Monday. The first practice begins at 8:00 am, PT, with the afternoon session slated to start at 4:00, pm PT. Practices are open to fans and media, but all practice times and locations are subject to change.
