Hooker Selected Preseason All-American by Soccer Buzz

Aug. 17, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. - California junior defender Courtney Hooker was one of 12 players named to the 2006 Soccer Buzz Preseason All-America team, announced Thursday.

Joining Hooker on the preseason recognition list were: Notre Dame's Kerri Hanks, Florida State's Sel Kuralay and India Trotter, North Carolina's Heather O'Reilly, Texas A&M's Ashlee Pistorius, UCLA's Danesha Adams, Portland's Megan Rapinoe and Stephanie Lopez, Connecticut's Brittany Taylor, Stanford's Rachel Buehler and Vanderbilt's Tyler Griffin.

Hooker earned an assortment of honors in 2005, including second-team All-America from Soccer Buzz, second-team NSCAA All-West Region and first-team All-Pac-10.

The Woodland Hills, Calif., product was an integral part of Cal's dominating defense in 2005. Her team finished the season ranked seventh in the nation in goals-against average at 0.475 (school record) and eighth in shutout percentage at 0.64 (14-of-22 games). The 14 shutouts tied the 1988 Bears for the most in school history.

Last year, Cal also tied the 1987 and 1989 teams for the fewest goals allowed (11). In 1987 and 1989, Cal played five and four fewer games, respectively, than 2005.

Hooker has started all 42 games of her Cal career, and she attended two U.S. under-20 national team camps earlier this year.

Cal finished last season with a 16-4-2 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. The Bears open the 2006 season Aug. 25 against Indiana at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.
