Aug. 18, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash - Washington State defensive end Mkristo Bruce has been named to the 2006 Rotary Lombardi Award watch list, it was announced recently.
The award, named after legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, honors the top lineman in college football while raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Lombardi passed away from cancer in 1970 and the award was established in the weeks that followed.
Bruce, a senior defensive end from Renton, Wash., was an All-Pacific-10 Conference second team pick last season after posting career-best numbers of 67 tackles, including 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. The 15 tackles for loss were tied for first in the Pac-10 while his career-high 10 sacks were second in the conference. For his career Bruce's 18.5 sacks rank sixth all-time at WSU.
Earlier this summer Bruce was named to the watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Ted Hendricks Award and Lott Trophy. Additionally, he has been named to several pre-season All-America teams, including Sporting News (2nd team), Street & Smith's (3rd team) and Phil Steele's (4th team).
Bruce is one of 101 players on the 2006 Rotary Lombardi Award watch list, and one of 13 from the Pacific-10 Conference.
