Offense Shines In Night Scrimmage

Sam Keller and Rudy Carpenter combined for seven touchdown passes, while Terry Richardson caught two touchdown passes and also returned a punt for a touchdown as the offense shined in Friday night's football scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium.

Keller was 20-of-29 and threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns while Carpenter tossed for 342 yards and five touchdowns on 12-of-21 passing.

Newcomer Ryan Torain led the rushing attack with 42 yards on 10 carries while sophomore Shaun DeWitty rushed six times for 36 yards and two touchdowns.

Richardson caught 11 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns as 11 Sun Devils caught passes.

ASU, ranked 24th in the preseason poll, opens it season on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. against Northern Arizona.

Arizona State's inclusion in the 2006 preseason Associated Press poll marks just the second time ASU has been ranked in the preseason poll inback-to-back years in 24 seasons (1983 to present). It was ranked 20th inthe poll last year. In 1998, ASU was ranked eighth in the preseason poll and was 25th prior to the 1999 season.
