Aug. 18, 2006
SEATTLE-- The Washington volleyball team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage Monday, August 21 at 7 p.m. at Bank of America Arena. The scrimmage is open to the public and admission is free.
The scrimmage will give volleyball fans their first look at the UW volleyball team since the Huskies won the 2005 NCAA National Championship last December.
The team returns three starters and six letterwinners for the 2006 campaign, including 5-8 senior setter Courtney Thompson (Honda Award winner, two-time first team All-American), 6-1 junior outside hitter Christal Morrison (2005 NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, two-time All-American) and 6-2 junior middle blocker Alesha Deesing (first team All-Pac-10).
Washington also welcomes a host of newcomers, including 5-10 senior outside hitter Janine Sandell who transferred from UC Santa Barbara. Sandell was the 2005 Big West Conference Player of the Year and was named to the All-American honorable mention team last season.
UW opens the 2006 season at the AVCA College Volleyball Showcase in Madison, Wis. The Huskies make their debut vs. No. 15 Ohio at 5 p.m. (CT) on Aug. 25. Texas and host Wisconsin will also take part in the tournament, which will air live on CSTV.
