Cal Closes Second Week of Fall Camp
Aug. 19, 2006
BERKELEY - The University of California football team wrapped up its second week of preseason camp with a pair of practice sessions on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears are now exactly two weeks away from their season opener at Tennessee on Sept. 2.
In the morning session, sophomore Nate Longshore and senior Joe Ayoob each completed four passes in team drills. Longshore's longest pass was a 32-yarder to sophomore wide-out DeSean Jackson. Ayoob later connected with Jackson for his longest pass of 12 yards. Later, in seven-on-seven drills, Longshore hit Jackson for a 35-yard reception. Also in the drill, freshman tight end Cameron Morrah snagged a touchdown delivery from sophomore Bryan Van Meter.
'[Practice] was sharp,' head coach Jeff Tedford said. 'We're proud of the way we're working. The guys are getting sharp, getting timing down. We're banged up, but I'm really happy with the way the guys are working through it, working through the bruises and things like that. They're practicing well.'
The defense picked up their intensity in the afternoon session as senior cornerback Randy Bundy had an interception and broke up several passes. Junior defensive tackle John Allen also had an interception.
Longshore did, however, lead the offense down the field in an eight-play series, connecting on six-of-seven passes, including back-to-back 20-yard deliveries to Jackson. The drive ended on a 25-yard field goal from junior Tom Schneider.
Junior receiver Sean Young also stood out in practice with multiple receptions for long yardage.
The Bears will enter their final week of camp and host the Contra Costa Times Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 26th from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
Following the season opener against Tennessee on Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. (PST) on ESPN, the Bears host Minnesota in their home opener on Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. (PST) on TBS. For ticket information, call 1-800-GO-BEARS.
