Huskies Conduct Saturday Afternoon Practice Session

Aug. 19, 2006

SEATTLE - On another beautiful afternoon in the Pacific Northwest, the University of Washington football team conducted its 15th of 28 preseason practice sessions Saturday, prior to its Sept. 2 season opener at home against San Jose State.

The Huskies went through the approximately two-and-a-half hour session, which included an increased amount of live scrimmage situations, on the Husky Stadium turf before participating in a team-wide yoga session in Dempsey Indoor. The practice session was the second of the preseason that has been opened to the media.

Tyrone Willingham, in his second season as UW's head football coach, met with the press following practice and relayed his thoughts as to how the session went.

'I don't think today's practice was really indicative of the way our team has performed during the preseason,' said Willingham, who conducts two press briefings each day throughout the preseason practice period. 'We were a little sloppy today and I didn't think we were as sharp as we have been. I think the players who maybe wanted to find a wall to hit did so today.'

Willingham lauded the performance of punter Sean Douglas. The Bellevue, Neb. native blasted several punts well downfield during the special teams portion of the practice, including a 75-yarder that landed on the five-yard-line and nearly bounced out of bounds before entering the end zone. He followed that up with a 65-yard punt.

'I've said all along that Sean Douglas has the ability to be included as one of the top punters in the nation,' said Willingham. 'He has the ability to perform at a very high level and really just needs to work on special situations such as angling punts out of bounds near the end zone. I think our deep snapper situation has improved and Sean should have more time to get punts off.'
