Aug. 20, 2006
Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team played to a 3-3 tie at Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon at LMU's Sullivan Field. The two teams played one 45 minute period and two 30 minute periods. After a scoreless first, the teams combined for six goals in the final two periods.
UCLA's defense kept LMU under control in the first period, not allowing any shots in the first 45 minutes. The Bruins had eight shots during that time, five of which were saved by LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores.
In the second period, with most of the starters sitting out, the scoring opened up, and UCLA got on the scoreboard first thanks to an own goal at 67:18. Exactly 30 seconds later, sophomore forward Jason Leopoldo doubled up the score with a shot from the center of the box. LMU struck back quickly, earning a penalty kick at 70:43 that Adam Sloustcher converted. Trini Gomez tied up the game at 72:04 on a header from a corner kick.
The final period saw LMU record the go-ahead goal on a free kick at 83:02. Brad Stisser's free kick ricocheted off the right post and went in to the left corner past Bruin keeper Trevor Hunter. But with just two minutes left to play in the game, sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin scored the equalizer, hitting in an empty net shot after the LMU goalkeeper came out to challenge.
The Bruins will officially kick off the season on Saturday, Aug. 26 against Cal State Northridge at Drake Stadium at 7 pm.
