Rodriguez Nails Winning PK For U.S. Under-20 Team
Aug. 21, 2006
USC sophomore forward Amy Rodriguez came through big for the U.S. Under-20 National Team with the game-winning penalty kick that lifted the USA to a 2-1 win over Congo in the FIFA Women's Under-20 World Championships in Moscow, Russia. That 2-1 victory was followed by a 4-1 win over Argentina by the U.S. squad, which next faces France on Aug. 24 to close out group play.
Rodriguez has been a key member of the U.S. Under-20 squad this year, helping the team to qualify for worlds with a gold-medal finish at the 2006 CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Tournament in January. She also joined up with the full U.S. National Team in March for the Algarve Cup. Now reunited with the U.S. under-20 squad, Rodriguez has shown her strength up front. Against Congo on Aug. 18, Rodriguez got the call to line up for the penalty kick in the 65th minute of play. The USC forward drilled her shot to boost the USA ahead 2-0. The PK proved to be the game-winner, as Congo was able to score five minutes later to make it a 2-1 final.
