Women's Hoops Departs For Italy Foreign Tour Tuesday
Aug. 21, 2006
SEATTLE -- The Washington women's basketball team is set to leave tomorrow morning for a 10-day foreign tour of Italy that will include four games against international competition and stops in Rome, Vatican City, Florence, Venica, Verona, Lake Como and Milan. The Huskies will return to Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Washington will play three games against professional Italian club teams and one game versus an Italian select team. The Huskies' roster will include all 12 returning letterwinners led by senior All-American candidate Cameo Hicks. Washington's Italian tour is the fourth foreign trip taken by a Husky basketball team. UW visited France in 1994 and Australia twice in 1998 and 2002. The NCAA allows a team to take a foreign trip every four years.
The Huskies' first contest will be played Friday, Aug. 25 versus Palestrina Basket (12-18), a team which finished 10th in the South Division of Serie A2 (Italy's second division) this past season. The professional Italian season runs from October through April, with playoffs through June. UW will then take on the Firenze Select All-Stars made up of players from the surrounding area of Florence, Sunday, Aug. 27.
The Huskies will continue their foreign trip with games versus Giants Marghera (Aug. 29) and Carugate (Aug. 31), both Italian Serie A2 teams. Giants Marghera tallied a 22-8 record last season and finished third in the Serie A2 North Division. Carugate finished with a 12-18 record and a 12th place finish in the North Division.
Washington is coming off a successful 2005-06 campaign in which it advanced as far as the second round of the NCAA Tournament and tallied a 19-11 overall record. Led by first-team All-Pac-10 performer Hicks, all five starters return this year including junior point guard Emily Florence, junior guard Dominique Banks, senior forward Breanne Watson and junior forward/center Andrea Plouffe. Head coach June Daugherty is in her 11th season at the helm of the Washington program.
