Q & A With Husky Safety C.J. Wallace
Aug. 22, 2006
SEATTLE - One of the most veteran players on the Husky team this football season is strong safety C.J. Wallace. Entering the season, Wallace has appeared in 33 of a possible 34 games, starting 17. Among the team's top tacklers each of the last two years, Wallace has developed a reputation as a solid safety who packs a ferocious punch.
Gohuskies.com sat down with the senior from Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday to chat briefly about the upcoming season. Here's what C.J. had to say:
gohuskies.com: How have things been going for you so far this fall camp?
Wallace: Everything's been going good. I'm trying to get back after having been out for a bit in the fall. I'm trying to get into the groove of things. Everything's been coming along pretty well.
gohuskies.com: Now that you're a senior and a veteran as well, are you trying to take on more of a leadership role?
Wallace: This year, I've tried to focus on becoming more of a leader, more of a vocal leader and just doing everything right every time.
gohuskies.com: If you're playing at your absolute best, what kind of player do you think you are?
Wallace: Smash-mouth, old-school player. I like the old-school players.
gohuskies.com: Now that Dashon Goldson have moved from playing alongside you at safety to playing cornerback, what kind of corner do you think is going to be?
Wallace: He's a great cornerback. When he was a free safety, everyone knew he could cover. He could cover just like a cornerback at free safety. But with him being at cornerback now, it makes him just unbelievable.
gohuskies.com: Tell us about Jason Wells, the Huskies' new free safety?
Wallace: Jason's getting better and better every day. Ever since spring ball, he's been making really big steps. He's doing good things.
gohuskies.com: This is a pretty veteran secondary. How do you feel about your group?
Wallace: It's something that I haven't really seen here before. The last few years, we had depth, but not as much as we have now. It saves our legs a lot. It's good to know that there are other guys who can come in and play well.'
