Soccer Hosts Cougar Classic Tournament To Open 2006 Campaign

THIS WEEK: Washington State opens the 2006 season welcoming UNLV, No. 25 Gonzaga and Oregon State to Pullman for the Cougar Classic Tournament Aug. 25-27...Cougars face UNLV Friday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. and No. 25 Gonzaga Sunday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m...No. 25 Gonzaga takes on Oregon State Aug. 25 at Noon and UNLV clashes with Oregon State Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. in the remaining tournament games.
HEAD COACH Matt Potter SAYS: 'With preseason complete, its time to test ourselves against the wealth of competition out there and, this weekend, we'll do just that. This is the first time since being here we have had the opportunity to be at home for our season opener and we are delighted to open with our first `Cougar Classic' tournament.
'In UNLV, Gonzaga and Oregon State we have three very well coached and gifted teams. All are coming off great seasons and have only improved with their incoming classes. The quality of the soccer this weekend will be phenomenal! It will truly be fun to watch and a credit to how far the women's college game has come.'
SCOUTING THE REBELS: WSU faces UNLV Friday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. in the Cougars' 2006 home opener...match marks the third time the two programs have competed with the Rebels posting a 1-0 victory in the last meeting (Sept. 2, 2001)...2006 Rebels return 11 letterwinners and six starters from a squad that had a 13-7-3 overall record in 2005 and made an NCAA First Round appearance...UNLV had a 5-2-0 record in Mountain West conference play...head coach Katherine Mertz enters her second season with the Rebels...among UNLV's top returnees are junior Katie Carney and senior Tanya Roberts...Carney finished 2005 with seven goals and was named the 2005 Mountain West Tournament MVP...Roberts recorded six goals and earned All-MWC first team honors in 2005.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: WSU takes on No. 25 Gonzaga Sunday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. in the final game of the 2006 Cougar Classic...Cougars boast a 15-0-0 winning streak against the Bulldogs, notching an 8-0 victory in the last meeting (Sept. 22, 2002)...2006 marks Gonzaga's eighth campaign under head coach Shannon Stiles who has a 50-77-6 record with the program...Bulldogs finished 12-4-4 overall last season and made a First Round appearance in the 2005 NCAA Tournament...Gonzaga returns 18 letterwinners from its 2005 squad including senior Ashley Haugen and redshirt junior Nanda McCormick...Haugen made 20 starts in the Bulldog net in 2005, recording 11 shutouts ...McCormick led the Gonzaga attack last season with nine goals and three assists.
COUGARS TACKLE TOUGH SCHEDULE: Washington State's 2006 schedule features nine 2005 NCAA Tournament teams including matches against defending national champion Portland and 2005 runner-up UCLA...eight of the Cougars' 2006 opponents are nationally ranked in preseason polls.
