Aug. 22, 2006
BERKELEY - NCAA singles champion Suzi Babos has been named to the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Star team. The ITA, along with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), will treat Babos and the rest of the 2006 all-stars to an awards banquet this weekend in New York City.
This Saturday, Babos will attend a luncheon in the President's Suite Dining Room at the USTA National Tennis Center during the Arthur Ashe Kids' Day festival. Some members of the all-star team will participate in an on-court exhibition at Ashe Stadium. Later that evening, there will be a private reception at the ESPN Zone.
This 23rd edition of the ITA Collegiate All-Star Team includes the nation's top-ranked men's and women's tennis players from the season-ending Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and the NJCAA levels, as well as champions from the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and 2006 NCAA Championships.
The ITA has selected its All-Star Teams since 1984. Past honorees include current pros: James Blake, Bob and Mike Bryan, Jill Craybas, Justin Gimelstob, Paul Goldstein, Laura Granville, Kevin Kim and Lisa Raymond.
Babos, a 2006 All-American, became the first women's tennis player at Cal to win the national singles title with her 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 9 Lindsey Nelson of USC on May 29.
