Fall Camp Update #11
Aug. 24, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford Football held its final full contact controlled scrimmage of the 2006 Fall Training Camp on Wednesday at the Elliott Football Practice Fields
The Cardinal offense was productive running the ball and establishing a balanced attack. On the defensive side of the ball, the unit managed to record three sacks, an interception (which was returned for a touchdown) and a fumble recovery.
The running game continued to make positive strides as evident by the contributions made by the running backs on Wednesday.
Senior Nick Frank carried the ball four times for 53 yards, putting the ball in the end zone twice. One of the scores came on a 16-yard run. Anthony Kimble rushed five times for 40 yards, including a 4-yard run for a score. Jason Evans also added to the mix with three carries for 24 yards.
'I feel like we are making a lot of strides in the running game and the offensive line is really doing a great job of blocking,' commented Kimble.
Trent Edwards completed 8-of-15 for passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. His performance on Wednesday was an improvement from the previous scrimmage when he connected on 5-of-15 passes.
'The running backs hit the holes hard, and I felt like we had a good scheme going into today,' commented Edwards. 'When we are able to run the ball successfully, it makes it a lot easier to throw the ball.'
Peter Griffin provided the biggest highlight on the day for the defense when the linebacker intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown. On the play, the pass went in and out of the hands of the intended receiver and Griffin had a clear path to the end zone.
Wednesday's scrimmage marked the last full scrimmage of training camp before the season-opener on September 2 at Oregon (12:30 pm, PT, ABC). The Cardinal returns to a one-a-day format on Thursday and Friday with a light workout on Saturday.
'Opening at Oregon is going to be a wild environment, said Kimble. 'It is going to be a big test right away. It will begin to show us where we are as team.'
All Stanford Football Practice sessions will be closed to the general public. This policy will be strictly enforced. For special arrangements to attend any practice please contact Matt Doyle in the Stanford Football office at email@example.com.
TC Ostrander returned to limited action ... Tavita Pritchard completed 6-of-12 passes for 45 yards ... Garrett Moore connected on both his pass attempts, one of which resulted in a 6-yard touchdown reception by Josh Catron.
Over 500 guests will be on hand for the Annual Stanford Football Kickoff Dinner on Thursday evening. The program will feature MC Bob Murphy, Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby, Coach Walt Harris, and players Michael Okwo, Trevor Hooper and Trent Edwards.
The Stanford Football program hosted 25 kids from Oak Knoll Elementary School (Menlo Park) on Wednesday. The students watched the scrimmage from the sidelines, spent time getting autographs from the players and joined the team for dinner at the Manzanita Dining Hall.
