Trojans Take Stock Of The Future
Aug. 24, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- In an unprecedented move, right-handed pitcher/catcher Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS), the 2005 Baseball America Youth Player of the Year, has enrolled at USC and will be eligible for the 2007 season. He will forgo his high school senior season in order to play for the Trojans.
'This is a stamp of approval not only for USC baseball, but also for college baseball,' said USC head coach Chad Kreuter. 'Robert is an accomplished two-way player who adds another left-handed bat to our lineup.
'It's monumental that Robert would pass on an opportunity to be drafted and sign for a lot of money after his high school season in order to go to college. I believe Robert and his family fully understand the value of education and the obstacles that are present when you sign out of high school.'
Stock played in the 2006 Aflac All-American Classic on Aug. 12 in San Diego where he was the starting pitcher for the West squad and allowed two unearned runs in one inning before striking out the side. He showed his hitting prowess later in the game with a solo home run to center field.
As a junior last season at Agoura High, Stock batted .456 with six home runs and 25 RBI while posting a 5-3 record with a 2.69 ERA. On top of his fastball which has been clocked as high as 95 miles per hour, he committed just one error and threw out almost 70% of base runners as a catcher.
Along with his Baseball America honors, Stock was named Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Times in June.Stock's Agoura team reached the CIF Division I final, losing to Lakewood, 2-1, despite Stock throwing six shutout innings and going 3-for-3 at the plate.
Stock enhances a recruiting class that includes freshmen pitchers Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothill HS), pitcher Kevin Couture (Coronado/Coronado HS), 2005 Aflac All-American infielder Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS), outfielder Michael O'Neill (Riverside/Riverside Poly HS) and pitcher/infielder Hector Rabago (Riverside/Riverside Poly HS).
The Trojans also added several transfers for the 2007 season: outfielder Nick Buss (Clinton Township, Mich./San Diego Mesa JC), outfielder/first baseman Darren Gemoll (San Jose/College of San Mateo), outfielder/first baseman Derek Perren (Chatsworth/L.A. Pierce College), outfielder Will Rice (Houston, Texas/Tulane) and pitcher/outfielder (San Antonio, Texas/Texas A&M).
