Aug. 25, 2006

BERKELEY - California senior linebacker Desmond Bishop has been selected for the Watch List for the 2006 Butkus Award, which is presented to the nation's best collegiate linebacker by the Downtown Athletic Club or Orlando. Bishop, a junior college transfer, burst onto the collegiate scene last season, registering a team-best 89 tackles and earning All-Pac-10 recognition.

Bishop and the Golden Bears open their 2006 season on Sept. 2, playing at Tennessee at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific). That game will be televised live by ESPN. The home opener for the Golden Bears is Saturday, Sept. 9 against Minnesota at 4 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-800-GO-BEARS.

A product of Fairfield, Calif., and Fairfield High School, Bishop played two years at City College of San Francisco and was rated by Superprep as the fourth-best community-college player in the country. In addition to his 89 tackles last season, he led the Bears in tackles seven times and had at least seven tackles in a game eight times during the season.

Bishop is the fifth Cal player to be selected for a Watch List, joining Daymeion Hughes, Brandon Mebane, Marshawn Lynch and Nu'u Tafisi.

The Butkus Award Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 19. That semi-finalist list will be cut down to three finalists which will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award officials on Thursday, November 9. The winner will be announced Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, Fla. The Butkus Award will be presented to the winner by the awards namesake former University of Illinois and Chicago Bear NFL Hall of Fame member, Dick Butkus.

The independent Butkus Award Selection Committee for the 2006 Butkus Award, comprised of some of the nations foremost journalists, is solely and exclusively responsible for all voting in the Butkus Award selection process. Additional Watch List candidates may be added in the coming weeks due to outstanding in-season play.
