SAN MARCOS, Texas - The No. 14 USC Women of Troy opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 victory (30-18, 30-17, 30-18) over North Texas at the CenturyTel Premier Tournament. Junior transfer Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) led USC with 15 kills against just one hitting error for a dynamic .538 percentage. Sophomores Jessica Gysin and Diane Copenhagen added 12 kills each in Friday's first match for USC.
Gysin saw the first significant action in her collegiate career after batting injuries her first two years.
USC (1-0) hit .353 in the match, including a game-high .486 in game two, and held North Texas (0-2) to a .058 percentage. Junior transfer Bethany Johansen also had an efficient match for the Women of Troy with nine kills and a .500 hitting performance (9-1-16).
The Women of Troy jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first game of the match. Kaczor and Gysin continued the pace with several kills in the latter part of the game. Gysin provided the game-winner as USC took the 1-0 lead.
Both teams played evenly in game two until USC freshman setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) slammed home a pass at the net for a 9-7 advantage. Carico's play started a 10-5 run before North Texas' first timeout with Copenhagen recording three of the last four kills. After the timeout, sophomore Kelli Tennant rattled off four straight service aces before a service error ended the streak for a 22-13 lead. Gysin and Kaczor added two more kills each for the game two victory.
Carico recorded 35 assists and five digs in her collegiate debut as USC earned the sweep on Copenhagen's final kill.
USC will face UTPA in a 7 p.m. match tonight and conclude the tournament with a 1 p.m. match tomorrow (Aug. 26) against host Texas State.
