USC Opens With Scoreless Overtime Battle Against UC Santa Barbara
Aug. 25, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's soccer team peppered the UC Santa Barbara goal with shot attempts in the Trojans' season opener on Friday at McAlister Field, but the home team will have to wait a bit longer to claim its first goal of 2006. The Women of Troy battled through a scoreless nonconference face-off with the visiting Gauchos, resulting in a 0-0 score through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Both teams now hold 0-0-1 records.
The 0-0 result marks USC junior goalkeeper Veronica Simonton's 15th career shutout, ranking her No. 1 in the USC history books. Simonton nabbed a pair of saves against UC Santa Barbara to help lock down the history-making effort. She is now tied in the top slot with Julie Peterson, needing just one more shutout to stand alone on USC's career shutout leader.
The Trojans had 14 shots in the game, compared to the Gauchos' seven. A UCSB handball in the box during the second overtime frame awarded USC a penalty kick in the 113th minute of play. Senior defender Lindsay Parker lined up for her first career penalty kick attempt, but her low shot went wide of the goal to leave the game still scoreless. Three minutes later, USC created its 14th shot of the game when freshman forward Jamie Petrossi let fly her fourth shot of the game, but UCSB keeper Katie Wright made the save.
Petrossi pestered the Gaucho defenders throughout the game, leading the Trojans with four shots during her first game at USC. She also helped create one of the best scoring chances of the game in the second half when she got loose on the left side and delivered a cross to junior forward Lauren Brown on the face of the goal. Brown drilled her shot, only to have diving keeper Wright make the outstretched save and keep the game scoreless in the 60th minute of play.
The Women of Troy return to action in pursuit of their first win of the season when UC Irvine comes to town on Sunday (Aug. 27). The Trojans face the Anteaters at 1 p.m. at McAlister Field.
