Huskies Fall To No. 8 Texas, 3-2, In AVCA Showcase Championship

MADISON, Wis.-- The third-ranked University of Washington volleyball team (1-1) lost a five game heart breaker to eighth-ranked Texas (2-0) Saturday night in the AVCA College Volleyball Showcase Championship. Game scores were 30-24, 23-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-13.
The loss marks the first for the Huskies since they fell to UCLA on Nov. 12, 2005 and just their second loss since the 2004 season. The match was broadcast live on CSTV and was played in front of 3,641 fans at the UW Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
The Huskies out-hit the Longhorns .255-.203 and held the advantage in digs (74-70) and blocks (17-10) but UT held the advantage in kills (77-75) and service aces (6-0).
Christal Morison led the Dawgs with 22 kills, while Stevie Mussie and Alesha Deesing added 13 kills each. Jessica Swarbrick tallied 11 kills on the night while leading the team with eight blocks, while Courtney Thompson dished 61 assists and led UW with a career-best 22 digs.
Destinee Hooker led Texas with 22 kills, while Dariam Acevedo chipped in 19 kills and Leticia Armstrong added 15 kills.
Texas won the first and third games and was leading in game four before Washington battled back to win the set 30-28 and force the tie-breaker. Game five knotted six times as late as 9-9 before the Huskies used a kill by Morrison and a triple block by Jill Collymore, Swarbrick and Mussie to take the 13-10 lead. Hooker then fired off four consecutive kills to lift the Longhorns to the 15-13 upset victory.
Washington returns to action next week when it competes in the Davidson Tournament in Davidson, N.C. The Huskies will open the tournament against Davidson on Aug. 31 at 8 p.m., before taking on Morehead State and Liberty on Sept. 1.
