Jessica Gysin Shines In No. 14 USC's 3-0 Sweep Of Host Texas State

Aug. 26, 2006

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/Mountain View HS) had a career-high 13 kills Saturday as the No. 14 USC Women of Troy earned its third straight 3-0 sweep (30-18, 30-14, 30-14) against Texas State at the CenturyTel Premier Tournament. USC hit .325 in the match to open the season with a perfect 3-0 record while holding Texas State to a .000 hitting day.

Junior outside hitter Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/Mountain View HS) also had 13 kills in the match while junior transfer outside hitter Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) chipped in 12 kills. Copenhagen hit a team-high .417 (12-2-24) along with three solo blocks and eight digs.

Junior middle blocker Bethany Johansen (San Jose/UC Santa Barbara) completed an efficient weekend for the Women of Troy, recording just two errors in 39 swings. Freshman setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) posted 34 assists with four kills, eight digs and three block assists. Senior All-America libero Debora Seilhamer (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) had 24 digs and is averaging over seven digs a game early in the 2006 season.

In front of a spirited Texas State crowd, both teams went back-and-forth in game one as the host Bobcats held a slim 10-9 lead. USC found a good rotation with Seilhamer serving. Gysin hammered five kills in a run of six straight points as Texas State took its first timeout, down 15-10. A couple of ball-handling errors called on Texas State gave USC the 20-12 lead before the Women of Troy closed it out as Gysin dropped the hammer on a crosscourt shot. Gysin finished the game with nine kills while USC hit .306 (21-6-49).

The Women of Troy jumped out to a 9-3 lead in game two, thanks to another stretch by Gysin where she registered a kill and back-to-back solo blocks. Copenhagen hit two of her game-high four kills as the Women of Troy pulled away once again and equaled the feat to get the sweep. USC used an 8-2 run at the start of game three to cruise to the victory.

USC hosts the USC/LMU Tournament next weekend at the Lyon Center (Sept. 1-3). Friday's action starts at 5 p.m. with North Carolina taking on Utah with USC playing Fresno State at 7 p.m. Saturday's lone match features USC against Utah at 2 p.m. and Sunday's matches will be Utah against Fresno State at 2 p.m. and USC playing 2005 NCAA Final Four participant Tennessee at 4 p.m.
