No. 17 Cal Volleyball Captures 2006 Cal Molten Classic

Aug. 26, 2006

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by Co-Tournament MVPs Angie Pressey and Hana Cutura, the No. 17-ranked Cal women's volleyball team (3-0) captured the Cal Molten Classic with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-20, 30-25) victory over Baylor (2-1) Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. Junior outside hitter Pressey led the Golden Bears with 20 kills and only had five errors in 35 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage. Cutura, a true freshman from Zagreb, Croatia, was also impressive, finishing with 18 kills and only one error in 30 attempts for a .567 hitting percentage. For the tournament, Pressey tallied 47 kills in three matches with five service aces, while Cutura collected 45 kills and four service aces.

Other all-tournament selections for the Bears included senior libero Jillian Davis as the Defensive Standout after collecting 39 digs in the three matches and senior setter Samantha Carter with 112 assists in the three contests. Cal captured the tournament by defeating Montana 3-0 Friday night, and defeating UC Davis 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-19) Saturday in a noon match. Cal has now won eight regular-season tournaments in the last five years.

Other Saturday matches included Baylor topping Montana, 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-18) at noon. In the 4:30 third-place match, UC Davis defeated Montana, 3-0.

In the championship match against Baylor, Cal out-hit the Bears, .394-.019, jumping out to an impressive 30-12 first-game advantage. The toughest point in the contest for the Golden Bears was game three when Cal fell behind 14-11 and had to battle back before finally tying the game three, 21-21 on a Pressey kill. The Golden Bears controlled the match from that point on, outscoring the Bears, 9-4, with the help of a pair of Pressey kills, a service ace and a game-ending kill by junior Ellen Orchard, a kill by sophomore Morgan Beck, and a Cutura kill.

'This was a great tournament for us,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'The purpose of the preseason is to build some momentum and I think we did that. We played a little bit better each time out and were real sharp tonight. Besides Angie and Hana, I was pleased with the way Ellen Orchard performed...she is really playing with a lot of confidence. Natalie Smart also did a great job and will be tough to beat out when our injured players return. Morgan Beck is doing all we can expect, and our usual standouts (team captains Carter and Davis), were awesome.'

Cal will next attempt to capture another tournament when it visits the Florida International Invitational, Sept. 1-2 in Miami, Fla. The Golden Bears then host another tournament at Haas Pavilion (with Pepperdine, American University and Oral Roberts) Sept. 8-9.
