Smith, Wiggins Tabbed Wade Trophy Preseason Candidates

Aug. 26, 2006

STANFORD, Calif.- Senior center Brooke Smith and junior guard Candice Wiggins have been named to the 25-player watch list for the Wade Trophy, which is presented to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's NCAA Division 1 player of the year.

The award is based on game and season statistics, leadership, character, a player's effect on her team and overall playing ability. The winner will be announced during the WBCA convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four in Cleveland on March 30-April 3.

Wiggins, a native of San Diego, Calif., is a two-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year. The 26th player in school history to score 1,000 points in her career, Wiggins led the Cardinal in scoring (21.8 ppg) last year and currently ranks 17th in school history with 1,352 points scored entering her junior season.

Currently the school record-holder in points per game, Wiggins is averaging 19.6 points per contest over two seasons. She is also third in program history in free throw percentage (82.9).

Smith, a native of San Anselmo, Calif., was tabbed an honorable mention All-American as a junior. Also a member of the 1,000-point club at Stanford, Smith is currently the school record-holder in field goal percentage, shooting 59.1-percent from the field.

In 2005-06, Smith averaged 17.2 points per game while leading the Cardinal with 7.5 rebounds per contest.

The State Farm Wade Trophy, now in its 29th year and named after the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade, debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball. This highly prestigious award, regarded as the 'Heisman of Women's Basketball', is organized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in conjunction with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).
