BROOKINGS, SD - The Washington State volleyball team fell to South Dakota State 30-23, 31-29, 24-30, 30-28, in the championship match of the SDSU Jackrabbit Kickoff Tournament at Frost Arena in Brookings.

In the first game, SDSU extended a 23-21 lead to 28-21 before Faleti stopped the run with a kill for the Cougs. But the Jacks, who hit .316 in this game, traded points with WSU and took the 30-23 win.
The Jacks took a 19-12 lead in the second game before WSU scored seven-straight to tie at 19-all. The undefeated teams battled to 28-all tie. Faleti slammed down a kill to put the Cougs at game-point but the victory was not to be. SDSU staved off the game point to tie it at 29. A WSU blocking error put the Jacks up 30-29, and serving for the win. After a WSU timeout, SDSU landed the winning point, 31-29.
The Cougars hit .267 and held the Jacks to a .125 hitting percentage in the third game win of 30-24 but could not keep the momentum for the fourth and final game.
'I was really encouraged by our side of the net; we have some young players and they did an awesome job tonight,' Washington State Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'I thought both teams played good volleyball in games two, three and four. There wasn't a lot of service errors or hitting errors and both sides did a good job.'
Heffernan singled out freshman Cassie Robbins for her play in the tournament saying, 'She is getting better and better every time she steps on the floor. She is a 6-3, Pac-10 level athlete body who as we progress through the season will become an X-factor for us. As she develops she is going to really open things up for our outside hitters.'
WSU's Faleti and Beyer joined NDSU's Christy Stuewe, Gonzaga's Becky Jones and SDSU's Emily Rooney and Minette Ridenour on the all-tournament team. SDSU's Kristie Klusaw was named the tournament MVP.
Washington State travels from Brookings, South Dakota, to Portland, Ore., for a Tuesday, Aug. 29, match at the University of Portland.
