Sydney Donahue Ties Pac-10 Digs Record; Sun Devils Sweep Through LMU To Claim Tournament Title
Aug. 26, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. -
Thanks to a Pac-10 record tying 50 digs by junior libero Sydney Donahue and the performance of tournament MVP Nicole Morton, the Arizona State Sun Devils swept through the Loyola Marymount Lions to win the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Sun Devil Volleyball Classic. Morton turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 23 digs to lead the Sun Devils to victories of 30-26, 30-27 and 30-25.
The Lions and Devils each entered the title game at 2-0, and early on showed why as the two squads battled hard throughout the game. After four ties and seven lead changes, the Devils eventually pulled away. Margie Giordano, who was outstanding all weekend, killed 14 in the nightcap to go along with her 19 digs.
Game two was another back and forth battle, and the two teams had seven ties and three lead changes. ASU began to pull away late, fending off a furious LMU rally to win it 30-17 and go up two games to none.
Coach Brad Saindon's bunch came out in game three determined to finish the weekend flawless. ASU never trailed in the game while the Lions managed to pull even only once early on. Danielle Fernandes helped to punctuate the team's perfect weekend with her 10 kills, many during key rallies that helped to keep some distance between ASU and LMU. In the end it was the senior Morton who proved too much for the Lions. LMU also had no answer for Donahue, who seemed to cover every square inch of the court for her record performance.
ASU will now head to
Emily Day, Loyola Marymount
Heather Hughes, Loyola Marymount
Ashley Reeves, Northeastern
