No. 10 Cal Shuts Out Wisconsin, 1-0, to Claim Wisconsin Invite
Aug. 27, 2006
MADISON, Wis. - Sophomore forward Valerie Barnes tallied the game-winning goal for the second straight game to lift No. 10 California to a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 and claimed the Wisconsin Invitational title, while the host Badgers fell to 1-1.
Barnes notched the game's only goal in the 34th minute off a long free kick from defender Brianna Bak. Barnes half-volleyed the ball and slotted it past the keeper into the corner. After scoring only two goals as a rookie, Barnes already has two in the first two games of 2006. She lifted the Bears to a 1-0 win over Indiana on Friday.
'The goal was well done by Val,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'She only had one good chance today, and she stuck it away. We had a few other chances, but we didn't put them on frame.'
Cal out shot Wisconsin, 12-10, for the game and held an 8-6 edge in the second half. Bears senior goalkeeper Anna Key recorded three saves to earn her second consecutive shutout today, while Wisconsin's goalkeeper Stefan Szczechowski grabbed three saves.
The Bears have continued their defensive dominance of 2005 when they earned 14 shutouts to tie a school record. Senior defender Alivia Mazura was named the MVP of the Wisconsin Invitational.
'Kristine Relja was also outstanding this weekend,' said Boyd.
The Bears return to action against Kansas Friday, Sept. 1, at 4:30 p.m. on the opening day of the Cal Invitational.
