LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- After a scoreless start to the 2006 season, the USC women's soccer team had a breakout performance in its second game of the year, blasting a 4-1 win over UC Irvine on Sunday at McAlister Field to notch the Trojans' first win. The Women of Troy wasted little time getting to the back of the net in this one, as sophomore midfielder Stacey Strong drilled a 15-yarder just a minute and a half into the game. By the 16-minute mark, USC had slipped in two more goals and held a 3-0 lead at the half. The victory bumps the Trojans to 1-0-1 on the season, while UC Irvine moves to 0-2.

Strong's quick score for the Trojans was set up by a cross from junior defender Laura McKee, who hit junior forward Lauren Brown in front of the goal. Brown settled the ball for Strong, who blazed in the goal to the left side of the net. The assist was McKee's first in her career, but the junior didn't stop there. McKee delivered another slick cross in the second half to Jocelyn Hein, who knocked in USC's fourth goal of the game at the 66-minute mark, giving McKee two points on the day.

After Strong's opening goal, the Trojans continued with their offensive pressure. The momentum peaked with a pair of goals within three minutes of each other. In the 13th minute of play, freshman forward Jamie Petrossi was tripped up on a breakaway that earned UC Irvine's Makenzie Beahm a yellow card and gave USC a free kick outside the penalty box. Senior midfielder Rosa Anna Tantillo served up a strong shot that Anteater goalie Erin Henry got a hand on to save, but the ball came down at the feet of USC's Brown, who punched in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Less than three minutes later, Tantillo served up her second assist with a centering pass to sophomore forward Nini Loucks. Loucks one-timed the ball to the back of the net for a 3-0 USC lead just over 15 minutes into the game.

In the second half, UC Irvine was able to break through when Lauryn Birkinshaw got the ball up to Kim Horn. With Simonton coming at her, Horn pushed her shot crosscage, notching a goal for the Anteaters that made it 3-1 at 56:56. USC would have the last word, however, with McKee's cross to Hein. Hein's left-footed touch to the back post made it 4-1 at 66:45.

Also tallying two assists in the game was Tantillo, who now ranks No. 5 in USC history for career points. The senior has accumulated 58 points so far as a Trojan.

The Women of Troy return to action with a road trip to Notre Dame, where USC will face the Fighting Irish on Friday (Sept. 1) and Harvard on Sunday (Sept. 3) during competition at the Notre Dame adidas Classic.
