Aug. 28, 2006
MARGHERA, Italy - Washington women's basketball improved to 2-0 on its foreign tour of Italy with a 91-66 victory over Giants Marghera in Marghera, Italy, Monday evening.
Senior guards Cheri Craddock and Cameo Hicks led the Huskies with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Also scoring in double-figures for UW were junior center Andrea Plouffe (12), senior forward/center Maggie O'Hara (10) and senior forward Breanne Watson (10). Watson and Hicks led the team in rebounding with eight boards each.
The international three-point line of 20 feet, six inches didn't seem to bother leading scorer Craddock, who drained a trio of three-pointers in the game, including two in the fourth quarter. Her 18 point performance came on the heels of scoring 17 points in the Huskies' first game of the tour on Friday.
Giants Marghera gave the Huskies an early test, jumping out to a 12-10 lead six minutes into the game. But UW came back with a 5-0 run and led by five, 25-20, at the end of the first quarter. From there the Huskies never looked back.
Washington used an 11-0 run in the second quarter to lead by 17, 47-30, with six different players contributing points in that span. UW led by 17, 54-37, at halftime. The closest Giants Marghera came in the second half was 11 points, as the Huskies continued their dominance. Washington closed out the game with a 10-0 run to win 91-66.
Head coach June Daugherty is using a different starting five in each game of the trip. Starting against Giants Marghera were senior guard Erica Schelly, Craddock, sophomore guard Stefanie Clark, senior forward Jill Bell and Maggie O'Hara. Team captains for the game were Plouffe, junior guard Emily Florence and junior guard Dominique Banks.
The Huskies will have a day to sightsee in Venice on Tuesday and then will have two more games in the final two days of the trip. UW will face San Vitale in Switzerland, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. and Comense in Como, Italy, Thursday, at 8 p.m.
