California's Alivia Mazura Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Aug. 29, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California senior defender Alivia Mazura has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Aug. 21- 27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Mazura, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., was named the MVP of the Wisconsin Invitational over the weekend. With Mazura anchoring the defense, the Bears (2-0-0) posted a pair of 1-0 road shutouts against Indiana and host Wisconsin to capture the title.
In Sunday's title game vs. Wisconsin, Mazura helped Cal shut down Kara Kabellis, Wisconsin's top returning scorer from 2005 with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists). The Cal defense limited the Badgers to four shots on goal, while the Hoosiers managed only three in Friday's season-opener.
Cal, tied for 10th in the preseason NSCAA poll, has carried over its stingy defense from a year ago, when Mazura and company tied a school record with 14 shutouts and set a school record for fewest goals allowed (11) and goals-against average (0.475) on their way to a 16-4-2 record and second-place Pac-10 finish.
Next up for the Bears is the 12th-annual Cal Invitational this weekend at Edwards Stadium where they will host Kansas and 15th-ranked Cal State Fullerton.
This is Mazura's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Cal's 16th weekly honor all-time.
