Volleyball Defeats Portland in Three Games
Aug. 29, 2006
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington State volleyball team handed the Portland Pilots a season-opening loss Tuesday night as the Cougars prevailed 30-22, 30-17, and 30-26, in the Chiles Center on the UP campus.
Cougar senior co-captain Kelly Rosin had 13 kills, hit a career-high .444 and contributed six blocks to lead WSU to its fourth win in five matches played this season. Brittany Johnson added 12 kills, Kelly Hyder 17 digs and Jalen Pendon 10 digs. Freshman setter Corina Beyer had 30 assists. Tara West and Cassie Robbins added another nine blocks as the Cougs out-blocked the Pilots 12.5 to 1.
Nicole Thometz, Jennifer Sheedy, and K.C. Fox each had eight kills to lead Portland. Thometz was the Pilot's dig leader with 17 and setter Kara Pein had 33 assists and four blocks.
The Cougars hit an outstanding .314 and held the Pilots to a .074 team hitting percentage for the three-game sweep.
'We were in control (but) game one and game three were not clean enough for me so far as what we want to do defensively and where we want to be as a team,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We need to come out and start matches and we certainly need to finish matches better than that. That is part of composure; it is not just when you are trying to come from behind or when you're up against a really tough team that is putting a lot pressure on you. Composure is also being great when you've just gone up 2-0 against an opponent. It definitely is going to be learned over the course of the season.'
Washington State come off the road for three matches in the friendly confines of Bohler Gym this weekend as the Cougs host the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament with UNLV, Boise State and UC Davis.
