MENDRISIO, Switzerland - Senior All-America candidate Cameo Hicks scored a team-high 22 points leading Washington women's basketball to a 111-57 victory over San Vitale in the third of four games during its 10-day tour of Italy, Wednesday evening.
Hicks was one of three Huskies to score at least 20 points, as senior forward Breanne Watson (21) and redshirt sophomore guard Stefanie Clark (20) also reached the 20-point plateau. Junior center Andrea Plouffe notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures for UW were senior guard Cheri Craddock (14 points) and senior forward/center Maggie O'Hara (10).
Wednesday's opponent - San Vitale - was not on the original schedule but was added as a substitute game for a contest that was cancelled in Florence. The game was played in Mendrisio, Switzerland, just north of the Italian border and only about 30 miles away from Como, Italy, where the Huskies are spending their last two days of the trip.
The victory improved UW's record on the tour to 3-0, as the Huskies also picked up commanding victories over Palestrina Basket and Giants Marghera. Washington will spend its final day in Italy in Como on Thursday, before facing Comense in Como, Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. The team will depart Milan for Seattle on Friday morning.
Head coach June Daugherty has used a different starting lineup in each game of the trip. Starting against San Vitale were junior guard Emily Florence, Craddock, Hicks, sophomore forward Heidi McNeill and Plouffe. Team captains for the game were senior guard Erica Schelly, Clark and McNeill.
San Vitale took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Washington led by as many as 13 in the first quarter, and extended that lead to 23 just before halftime. UW blew the game in open in the third quarter with Hicks scoring 10 of her 22 points in that 10 minute span.
