Mazura Selected to Soccer America, Soccer Buzz Team of the Week
Aug. 31, 2006
BERKELEY, Calif. - California senior defender Alivia Mazura, who was named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week Tuesday, has been selected to both Soccer America and Soccer Buzz's Team of the Week.
Mazura, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., was named the MVP of the Wisconsin Invitational last weekend. Behind her tough defense, the Bears (2-0) posted a pair of 1-0 road shutouts against Indiana and host Wisconsin to capture the title.
In Sunday's title game vs. Wisconsin, Mazura helped Cal shut down Kara Kabellis, Wisconsin's top returning scorer from 2005 with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists). The Cal defense limited the Badgers to four shots on goal, while the Hoosiers managed only three in Friday's season-opener.
Mazura has helped 10th-ranked Cal maintain its stingy defensive presence from a year ago. In 2005, the Bears tied a school record with 14 shutouts and set a school record for fewest goals allowed (11) and goals-against average (0.475) on their way to a 16-4-2 record and a second-place Pac-10 finish with a program-best 7-1-1 mark.
Next up for the Bears is the 12th-annual Cal Invitational this weekend at Edwards Stadium where they will host Kansas Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 15th-ranked Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 1 p.m.
