No. 14 USC Blocks Way To 3-0 Sweep Against Fresno State

LOS ANGELES -- Junior Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) hit a team-high 11 kills Friday as the No. 14 USC Women of Troy recorded the 3-0 victory (30-20, 30-10, 30-20) against the Fresno State Bulldogs in day one action at the LMU/USC Classic. The Women of Troy (4-0) have not lost a game this season and forced their opponent into a negative hitting performance for the second time.
USC stifled Fresno State (1-4) with 19.5 team blocks in the match as the Bulldogs hit -.099 overall with 35 attack errors.
Freshman setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 28 assists with seven digs and a team-leading eight block assists. Sophomore Jessica Gysin (Mountain View/St. Francis HS) and junior Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) had nine kills each with Kaczor leading all regulars with a .381 hitting clip (9-1-21). Lacey Gera and Angela Wiggins had five kills each for the Bulldogs. Carico opened the match with two straight service aces as the Women of Troy jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in game one. A kill by Gysin and solo block from junior Bethany Johansen forced a Fresno State timeout with the Bulldogs trailing, 15-7. The game went back-and-forth after that before Gysin and junior Katelyn Bishop stuffed a Bulldog attack and Copenhagen's kill earned the game victory.
Kaczor helped USC get its best foot forward in the second game, opening with two service aces for a 5-0 advantage. A back row kill from Kaczor and a few blocks pushed the lead to 13-3. A 5-2 run at the end and Johansen's back door kill finished the second game rout for the Women of Troy.
The Bulldogs turned the tables in game three, scoring the first four points as senior libero Cheryl Selenak capped it with a service ace. Fresno State used both timeouts early, however, after USC rallied to tie the game at 7-7 and added two more points at 9-7. Kaczor, Johansen and Copenhagen recorded kills in secession to build a 15-10 margin but the Bulldogs answered with a mini 6-3 run to trail 18-16. USC kept the pressure up as Copenhagen finished the three-game sweep with her final kill on the evening.
USC and No. 24 Utah plays tomorrow in the lone match at 2 p.m. with two matches on Sunday (Sept. 3) featuring Fresno State against Utah at 2 p.m. and USC against No. 11 Tennessee at 4 p.m. Both USC matches will be featured on a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
