Volleyball Powers Past Morehead State, 3-0

DAVIDSON, N.C.-- Junior Stevie Mussie led the third-ranked Washington volleyball team (3-1) with 18 kills Friday morning to lift the Huskies to the 3-0 victory over Morehead State (3-1) at the Davidson College Mizuno Wildcat Classic. Game scores were 30-20, 30-18, 30-17.

The Huskies out-hit MSU .326 to -.063 and held advantages in kills (42-26), service aces (8-3) and blocks (10-7.5), while Morehead State out-dug UW, 30-24.

Mussie's 18 kills were a season-high for the outside hitter, while Christal Morrison posted 12 kills and Jessica Swarbrick tallied seven kills on 12 swings for a .417 hitting percentage.

Courtney Thompson collected 36 assists, while Swarbrick and Tamari Miyashiro anchored the defense with seven blocks and nine digs, respectively.

Game one opened evenly with six ties through 8-8 before the Huskies edged out to the 16-11 lead to force a MSU timeout. The Eagles came out of the break with a 6-2 run to cut Washington's lead to 19-17. The Huskies closed out the match with an 11-3 run to take the first game, 30-20.

UW out-hit MSU in game one, .310-.020

Morehead State scored the first four points of game two before the Huskies went on a 9-1 run to take the 10-6 lead and trigger a MSU timeout. The Eagles were able to cut Washington's lead to two points at 13-11 but would get no closer as UW went on its own 5-1 run to take the commanding 22-15 lead. Washington scored six of the last seven points of the game to win, 30-18.

The Huskies out-hit the Eagles, .333- -.099 in the set.

MSU held the slight 5-1 lead in game three before the Huskies scored the next 11 points to go up, 15-5. Washington strung seven more points together, including two kills by Morrison and a Miyashiro ace, to take the 28-12 lead and the eventual 30-17 victory.

UW out-hit MSU .333- -.083 in the third game.

Washington will close out tournament play this afternoon when it takes on Liberty at 2:30 p.m..
