Volleyball Sweeps Colorado at Hawaiian Airlines Classic

HONOLULU - The 10th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team earned a three-game win in their opening game of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic with game scores of 30-25, 30-25, 30-25. The Bruins were led by senior outside hitter Katie Carter, who downed 10 kills in the contest. UCLA had a dozen players participate in the match, and Nana Meriwether finished with 10 blocks and a team-high 13 points.
UCLA led throughout the first game of the match with a Meriwether kill closing out the opening game win for the Bruins. Game two was tied as late as 11-11 before a Colorado service error gave the Bruins the lead for good.
Game three saw the Buffaloes extend a 13-9 lead before a Meriewether kill stopped a six-point Colorado run. The Bruins would chip away at the deficit, tying the game at 19-19 and taking the lead during a string of four consecutive attack errors by Colorado. CU would re-take the lead and the game was tied at 25-25 before Becky Mehring served four straight points to take UCLA to the 30-25 final game victory.
Colorado hit just .137 as a team in the match, including a .024 mark in the third and final game. As a team, the Bruins hit .321 in the contest, out-blocking the Buffaloes 14-5.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday night with a 7:30 pm Pacific Time match against No. 5 Florida at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic.
