Women Of Troy Open Play At Topy Cup In Japan

Sept. 1, 2006

The USC women's golf team, the second-place finisher at the 2006 NCAA Championships and ranked No. 8 in the 2006-2007 Golfworld.com preseason poll, opens competition for the new season on Tuesday (Sept. 5) at the Topy Cup at the Tanagura C.C. in Fukushima-ken, Japan.

Led by 2006 NCAA individual title-winner Dewi-Claire Schreefel, USC is one of two U.S. women's teams playing in the tournament, the other being Pac-10 rival Stanford. The rest of the field consists of four highly regarded Japanese collegiate teams. A men's tournament will be played simultaneously, also between American and Japanese schools.

USC will play a practice round on Monday (Sept. 4) and will play 18 holes Tuesday through Thursday (Sept. 5-7). Tuesday and Wednesday action begins at 8 a.m. (in Japan) and Thursday starts at 7 a.m.

Joining Schreefel in Japan under 11th-year coach Andrea Gaston will be seniors Catalina Marin and Veronica Felibert, junior Paola Moreno and freshman Caroline Kim.

USC is without a handful of members of its 2005-2006 squad, but will chiefly miss three-time All-American Irene Cho. Cho was the Women of Troy's top golfer in virtually every statistical category and won a USC-record-tying four tournaments last season, giving her five for her career.
