Cougs Win Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament
Sept. 2, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Brittany Johnson tallied 21 kills to lead the Cougar volleyball team to a 37-35, 30-23, 30-17 win over UC Davis Saturday night to win the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament at Bohler Gym.
Johnson, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., hit .360 in the final tournament contest as the Cougars won all three matches and advanced its season record to 7-1. Other Cougars with all-tournament selections included senior Kelly Rosin and junior Adetokunbo Faleti.
'We had moments of greatness and we had moments where we played not to our level,' Johnson said. 'I think we realized we need to pick it up when we get in those spots. That's something we did pretty well this tournament. It's really important to win at home all the time. Winning these first three games at home showed our fans, our boosters, our teammates that we can really do this. We're proving to everybody that this is a new time.'
Rosin added, 'Coming home, taking this tournament, it's building up that Cougar pride. We need to do that every time.'
UC Davis went winless in the tournament and its record dropped to 1-5. UNLV, lost only to the Cougars, and left Pullman with a 4-2 overall record after defeating Boise State 30-17, 30-27, 30-20 earlier Saturday evening. BSU went 1-2 in the tourney and takes a 3-4 overall record home.
In the Cougars versus Aggies match, WSU hit .263 as a team and held UCD to a .144 hitting percentage. WSU's libero, freshman Kelly Hyder, had 21 digs while sophomore Stephanie Weishaar added 13 digs and four of WSU's nine service aces. Freshman Cassie Robbins and Rosin each had four blocks while setters Corina Beyer and Maureen Perez split setting duties with 26 and 20 assists, respectively.
UC Davis's Chantal Paschetta had 16 kills, 13 digs and a pair of aces to lead the Aggies. Avreeta Singh had 14 digs and setter Katelyn Astruc had 37 assists.
The first game between the Cougars and Aggies was a fist-fight from the get-go. WSU overcame a 29-25 deficit to hold off UCD at game point four times, tying the game at 29. The Aggies had five more attempts at game point before back-to-back kills by WSU's Faleti ended the game with the Cougars taking a 37-35 win.
'We need to come with a more business like attitude. I feel that we are very good,' WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We can be very good on our side of the net and in order to do that it's not just about physically being present. Our team needs to be more mindful that we are working to become very good. They feel good because we're 7-1 right now and it's easy to get caught up in that and forget what it took to get here so I think we just need to be mindful of that. Everyone has worked hard in this program and I think we owe it to ourselves to play better than we played. I don't think it's a physical thing; I think it's more of a mental thing and a mindset that we are here to do our very best. That means that we're playing our very best. It means that we show up playing our best and if we can absolutely destroy a team than we should be going onto the floor to do that.'
Washington State plays in the University of Texas-Arlington Tournament next weekend, meeting Duquesne, Tulsa and host UT-Arlington.
