UCLA Downs Long Beach State, 1-0
Sept. 3, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Freshman forward Kristina Larsen's goal in the 83rd minute broke a scoreless tie, helping the second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team to an eventual 1-0 victory over Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who are now on a three-match winning streak, improve to 3-1 on the season. The 49ers are also 3-1 after dropping their first match of the year.
Larsen, who has scored in three of the Bruins' four matches this season, put UCLA on the board at the 82:18 mark of the second half. UCLA midfielder Caitlyn Mac Kechnie gained possession near midfield and managed to hit a low-sailing ball right over the Long Beach State defense. With Larsen running onto it, she beat her defender before unleashing a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal, just past the outstretched hands of 49er goalkeeper Liz Ramos. Larsen also had the game-winning goal in the Bruins' 1-0 victory over San Diego State on Friday.
UCLA, which had several quality scoring opportunities on the day, outshot Long Beach State, 18-4. Sophomore transfer Molly Kruger nearly gave the Bruins a lead right before halftime as her left-footed shot from the top of the box bounced off the crossbar.
Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson picked up her third win of the season Sunday, making one save in 90 minutes of action. Ramos finished with a match-high seven saves.
UCLA, which has played its first four matches this season without five starters who are competing at the U-20 FIFA World Championships in Russia, expects to have its full team for next week's UCLA Women's Cup. The Bruins will take on No. 9 Texas A&M on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and No. 16 UConn on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Seventh-ranked Santa Clara is also competing at UCLA next week. All matches will be at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
